With all our daily activities, sports, and busy lives, our knees are our most prized assets for getting us around. We sometimes do not realize the pressure and strain we put on our knees and take them for granted until something gives.
Our knees are the most vulnerable and most used joints in our body. It is the number one joint that gets replaced according to Harvard’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Common treatments that can reduce inflammation like ibuprofen, resting the knee, ice, taping or bracing can be used short term. But often mechanical or movement problems develop escalating to the possibility of surgery.
Knee pain is the most common problem area in the body. Any strenuous activity or exercise without proper care could cause the knee to trigger pain, discomfort, and inability to walk or run.
The knee bears the most loading force in our bodies since it rests between the hip and foot, which are mobile joints connecting to the knee. Most people don’t know that when you start having knee pain, it can also lead to abnormal stress on hip and ankle joints. In an attempt to avoid pain and take pressure off a knee, our pelvis tilts and puts a strain on the lower back often leading to unexplained back pain.
Athletes in particular need to pay extra attention to the “wear and tear” they create for themselves. A person may physically look like a young, healthy, strong 24-year-old, but the image scans of a knee can look like a 64-year-old.
Speaking of extra stress on the knees, did you know that one pound of body weight is equivalent to four pounds of pressure on your knees? So if you are 10 lbs. overweight, that’s an extra 40 lbs. on your knees alone. Maintaining healthy weight will help minimize further knee pain and damage.
And when old age sets in, arthritis becomes the most common cause of knee pain for older adults. Arthritis comes in three forms: osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis. In 2015, a Danish Review Study published in the British Medical Journal found that “people in their 50s and older who get arthroscopic surgery for knee pain show no lasting benefits. And doctors often disagree about whether knee surgery does more harm than good.”
Pain is telling you that it needs help and healing. Painkillers are for temporary relief and not for a cure. With time, the joint weakens further, it leads to increasing pain, swelling, and other complications.
There are alternative options like regenerative treatments that are non-surgical and minimally-invasive that are available for knee pain and knee complications. These treatments help restore and repair your knee, leading to less pain and improved mobility.
At the Goswami Clinic, we start with an initial consultation to evaluate your knee condition. Appropriate imaging is performed and we review the treatment options, helping you decide what’s best for you.
